Conjunction with No Roads
Expeditions, In May 2007,
we conducted the first ever
ascent of Rinjani from the
southern village of Timbanuh.
This awesome journey took
us to the never explored
southern rim, down to the
shores of the lake, where
we used inflatable rafts
to take us to Gunung Baru
base camp. We then headed
to Rinjani's summit and
ended the expedition in
the beautiful Senaru. |

The Expedition
This expedition was the
first of its kind and should
still be considered by those
with an adventurous spirit,
a flexible mind and a strong
body.
The expedition will attempt
the Rinjani summit from
inside the calderas, up
to the final summit ridge
that is used today. We will
approach this side of the
mountain from the southern
rim via Timbanuh. From there
we will head to Segara Anak
and then use inflatable
to transport us to the shores
of our first base camp.
This camp will be used to
explore the base of the
active volcano, Gunung Baru,
and then ultimately climb
its 500m slope to its rim.
We will peer into the calderas
of a mountain that only
erupted last year.
From base camp 1 we will
start our push to Rinjani's
summit from inside the calderas,
up its western slope to
the present day base camp.
We will camp and the following
day summit Rinjani, returning
to Senaru via the normal
route.
On the southern sections,
ropes will be used to assist
trekkers down the steep
cliff faces. This is a truly
unique way to climb one
of the best volcanoes in
the world. |

Itinerary |

Day 01
Early morning we leave to
hotel for Timbanuh village,
it takes around 2 hrs driving.
Then start for the beginning
of a challenging 8 hour
day. We head for Timbanuh
on Rinjani's southern slope.
From there we will climb
to the south rim. Awesome
views over the lake, Bali
and Rinjani's summit.
Day 02
After a delicious breakfast,
we head down to the lake
which we believe won't take
too long. From there we
set up the inflatable and
paddle towards Gunung Baru.
Set up camp at the base
of Gunung Baru.
Day 03
Today we will climb to the
summit of Gunung Baru and
look inside an active volcano.
The going will be very tough
as the slopes are pure scoria.
Back to base camp. Hot spring
baths to sooth our bodies.
Day 04
Today we climb the inner
calderas to the present
base camp. Great views again
and anticipation of summit
day tomorrow.
Day 05
Early morning wake up call,
2am. We head off for Rinjani's
summit and hopefully reach
it by sun rise. We will
be aided by a full moon.
Back down to the lake and
other hot springs.
Day 06
Trek to the northern rim
where we will camp for the
night and see exactly the
journey we have just done.
Day 07
Back down to Senaru for
a nice shower, food and
a walk to the local waterfalls.
Great little village and
a must see. If we are lucky
we may get involved in some
local Sasak stick fighting.
