Sumba Island
West Sumaba is the regency whose capital is
Waikabubak. It can be reached by plane from Kupang
and Denpasar via Waingapu, or by sea from Sape, kupang and Ende via harbor of Waikelo. |

Pasola is traditional ceremony performed by
horse-riders armed with spears. Two villages face
each other in a mock but far from innocent battle.
Such ceremonies as held each year in Wanokak, Kodi
and Lamboya, in February or March, and also on
certain holidays, such as on October and 17 august,
when exciting horse races and dance performances are
usually held.
Merapu is the belief in ancestral spirit and in a
transcendental substance, worshipped on a megalith
stone altar. Such stones are divine places. Such
ceremonies can be found in the villages’ Tarung and
Anakalang, which can be reached by car from
Waikabubak.
In Waikelo, there is a waterfall with beautiful
scenery, and a pool and recreation park.
The typical hand woven textiles of Sumba are
different from those produced in other areas of East
Nusa Tenbgara. Their motives are bigger. Such
textiles can be found in Village, at sales stands
and in Hotel. Price very according to quality and
age.
Waingapu is the capital of the regency of East Sumba.
It can be reached by aircraft from Denpasar and
Kupang, or by sea from Sape, kupang and Ende.
Waingapu is a port to exports horses and cattle
which are the main export of sumba Island.
Uma Mbatangu has traditional houses with high towers
whose top in which gods may reside. Unique
ceremonies are held to please them.
Sumba's sandel horses are the offspring of Arabian
Horses brought by Indian traders who came here in
earlier centuries in search of sandalwood.
The death ceremony is also the burial ceremony in
Sumba. It signifies the return of the spirit to its
place of origin (marapu).
Such ceremonies cost a lot of money, because dozens
of animals must be slaughtered especially in the
case of the burial of chieftains ( Umbul ). During
such ceremonies the stone cover of the tomb is
pulled by men over distance. |

Day 01:
Denpasar - Waingapu
after breakfast in Bali Hotel - transfer to Denpasar
airport.
upon arrival in waingapu, transfer to Hotel for
lunch, then visit the traditional village of
Prailiang. it is beautiful ride through the
savannah of the north coast Sumba. Overnight at
Merlin Hotel Waingapu
Day 02: Waingapu - Waikabubak
in the morning after breakfast, drive to waikabubak,
en route stop an Anakalang to see the huge and
carved stone tombs.
afternoon visit the traditional villages around the
town, such as Tarung, Waitabar and Paletilulu.
overnight at manandang Hotel Waikabubak.
Day 03: Waikabubak ( Kodi Tour )
After breakfast drive to Kodi - the area is known as
the tall traditional house and probably the tallest
on the island. There are plantations of
coffee, cashew nut, banana, and coconut and teak
wood forest.
Arrival kodi area visit some village such as:
Rantengaro and Parona Baroco, Picnic lunch at Tossi
Beach. back to hotel and overnight ( Manandang Hotel
).
Day 04: Waikabubak ( Pasola Tour )
early in the morning drive to southwards and then
trek to Sodan - the Village of Rato, the pasola
priest of Lamboya. it is a walk with beautiful
panoramic views, passing valley cut by a river with
rice fields and roaming buffaloes. after meeting
Rato walk down hill till reach the sport waht we
called SODAN POINT-from where one will view the
beautiful sodan valley furnished by village with
traditional houses soaring from coconut trees and
garnished with snake bent kadengae river. trek along
the valley until reach bridge at the other side and
take car to marossi beach for picnic lunch and get
yourself refreshed by swimming or relaxing on
the white sand beach. afternoon return to hotel and
overnight.
